Snowy Commute?

Every time it snows more than a few inches on a workday I vowed to ride. Problem is this year it hasn't snowed much at all. Today it did. Out the door by 5:45AM, had a nice workout. Snow was 3-5 inches deep. Heavey, soupy, thick, grippy, really grippy and white! Yes white sagging the trees and snow making the effort worthy.

The Wrong Stud Set-up for Fast
My day consisted of people looking at me before race and saying no fair, because I had studs on. I rode Thursday night, and at night with ICE, it was ssssslow. But way fun!!! I took out the old studded endo's from 09' to race. I thought without center line stud row they would be faster(jack beat me with better studs that year). Well, at slow speeds studs we're grippy. But race pace, they sucked. Slow in dirt too. It was painful. Gears sucked too. Other two races with dirt did SS Pug. Anyhow after being second to hole shot I got passed by 15 or more on the two lap prologue. Every one was saying you ok Heath? Alright sqrl? I kept saying think so. Antiboitics and perhaps a little sick still? Studs? Finally in section 4 I started reeling people in on fast icey downhills. Got to 8th place and saw Dave Hoglund not far up..

Lap two, I was working it pretty hard to stay away from Barry and Larry. In section four they caught me and asked to pass and if I was alright, I said I think so, and put in another big effort. I figured if I could at least make it to the top of section 4 I could scream a hot downhill section. It worked. I pushed up and down sec 4 pretty fast. The studs helped but rear tire without center line studs was sketchy for studs anyhow. In hindsight wish I would have tried the studs prior to race. Then I'd know light and super sketchy non-studs was better. Or lightly studded sharpies. My studs, with bolts had seen commutes, so not too sharp either. Hard to find time with family and all etc etc you know the drill.

So anyway I gaped Larry and Barry real good in section 4, they we're out of sight. But in final section 3, I was toast, they caught me. First Larry and later Barry near end of race. I ended 10th. It was still good enough for fatbike series overall win!! From what I hear I also won the hillside racer of the year with most points out of all the races. Traveling trophy coming. Sweet.

Speaking of trophies, Hillside is known to have some good ones. I have a few. Just got to hit it right. Artist produce the goods hit or miss. It was Hendrick's, Sue rules of late. That plus Hillside such a good time, big bonfire, stunts, people having fun, good prizes, cash, really.....that's why I keep going back. Plus the course is a nice challenge.

Speaking of trophy more, Jack. Where's the Fuji fixie (traveling Fatbike fest trophy?).

A little MN Fat History I know of.......
who had em first. i dunno. Here's a few. Dave Pramann, Goat, Hobs, Pirate, Zamboni, Stoner, Death Rider then Bob Shepard, John Lundell, Ted Weigandt.

You Bike Hoarder?

So it's that time of year to take inventory.
Define want vs. need, justify, replace. Keep or not.

BUT I KEEP ALL!!! Am I a bike hoarder??????

My bike man cave is quite messy right now! Winter, Summer, Pug, Niner this, wheel that, component this, this project that project....
I buy to replace and still decide to keep all parts in case I need. AAAAHHHHH!!!

Mayo clinic says                 My Bike Closet looks like this sort of

First step to recovery...admitting you have a problem. Is it just me?

Iced Catfish Carver Cup#2

It was fun - way way ice'eeee single track. Colbert got 1st, Jeff Young 2nd, I was third, Mike Larson studded 29'er 5th. Moto's win. A great turn out. For me busy week at work, drove Alta to 7:50AM indoor soccer game, late late Saturday night and after Thursday night the legs we're screaming ---> lay off! Richie had the city of woodbury go pro on helmet and chased me off the start. We left at the same time. I sorta cruised the start and actually rode the skinny both laps. First lap with a multi-second stall. I made the skinny but lost balance and track standed until regained balance. Fun but slow. Later once avail I'll post links to pics, results and video. It took a while but I started pulling away from Richie. It was so icey. I had some close calls and just didn't have the fire. Last week had it, this week didn't. Decided to save the body for Hillside. Duncan came out with skinny 29'er, but decided not to race. I don't blame him. Ice ice baby. Oh yea!

Bad For Bike?

Pic stole from Sauber County Cycles
Showed a few hours early to squeeze an hour in before the 2.5 hour group ride. 34 degrees. That first hour it was still warm enough that the water/mud spray was constant (I honestly had numb butt syndrome). Later on group ride ground started to re-freeze the slop. It was warmer. 9 riders. Afterward 8 made it to the saloon for greasy recovery food. Burn it off - get faster, go to the greasy spoon - put it on get slower. All worth it, good times.
Before the Solo Hour

After being outside for 4.5 hours, biked 3.5 or more
